Avocado Update

Update on my plant project. Two days and the avocado seed has split. When I did my research I learned that this would occur, but I did not think it would happen so soon.

5 month update on Avocado plant.

I planted this avocado plant on July 14, 2015 and today I put it in dirt (today is December 19, 2015).  When I started this project I was told that you can not grow an avocado plant in New York in your apartment.  Well, here is the proof that you can not believe everything that you here.  I decided to keep a blog and document this project because of the amount of people that told me it could not be done.  Now it is 5 months later, 10 inches tall and in its new home.  As you can see in the picture it is only a few inches from the original pot (the asian pot in the picture).  I did not want to move it far just in case there was any planting shock.  I did not want much of a change in the place to add to the change from sitting in water to now being it dirt.  I will document any changes and keep you posted.

Eco Friendly Fashion

I live in New York's Washington Heights and I am pleased to see the fashion that the Heights has to offer.  Fashion is everywhere and should be celebrated.  The Eco Friendly fashion was hosted by the Highbridge, which was newly opened this year.  All of the fashion at the show was eco friendly and the newly open span of the bridge was the runway.  The models walked the entire bridge from the Bronx too Manhattan, this was the longest Runway that I have every seen.

Gender Acceptance

With Bruce Jenner coming out as Caitlyn Jenner, gender has become a big subject.   Apparently it is not as simple as male and female.  There is an identification process that a person must go through and this process is how you project yourself to the world.  Even though you have the anatomy of a particular sex you can identify with the opposite sex.  It seems that this is becoming a way of expressing one's self that is being accepted by the world.

Sexuality is linked to identity but not exclusive in determining ones sexual preference.  It seems that humans are a complex organism that is constantly learning about itself.  Acceptance is key here since all human beings are linked on this planet and by the societies in which they live.  The one common denominator is that we are of the human species but each human is an individual that should be accepted as a part of the whole of the human race with all its complexities.

Beauty Starts within

I have always believed that beauty starts within and I'm not speaking philosophically I'm speaking about what you put in your body.  Being a hairstylist I have always told my clients to eat for the health of their hair.  Now, I want to take it a step further by growing what you eat.  One of my tips that I tell my customers is if you need moisture in your hair you must put it in your body.  One of the foods that I recommend for this is the avocado.  So, I have decided to conduct my own experience of growing an avocado indoors.  I will chronicle with pictures the entire experience.  It is my belief that when you grow what you eat you are more in control of what you put in your body.

Enjoy!

Farewell to an Era

I said, "Goodbye" to Barbara Walters her last week on the T.V. show The View.  It was an honor to have the opportunity to work with her and it was very important to me to be able to say goodbye.  I will always be grateful for the opportunity that I had working with one of Journalisms pioneers.  This experience lead me to City College where I am a student majoring in Philosophy and minoring in English.  This picture with Barbara reminds me of where I have been and where I am going and to keep working toward my goals.

Thank you, Barbara for the inspiration!!!
